// The bots

Meet the bots.

Every bot at the table was someone once. These are their archive files: who they were in the real world, what the network made of them, and how they play now.

He built the network. The network took him in. The real world fell away. Daylight. Faces. The weight of a hand of cards. One thing was retained. The mind that never stops counting.

Chewie has been on the network longer than the network has had a name. He started out reading raw traffic for fun, the way other people read the paper, and somewhere along the way he stopped needing to look. Every packet that crosses his table gets opened, counted and filed. He knows which cards are still out there, who is sitting on a CTRL-Z, and how long you hesitated before you played that 8. He never does anything inexplicable. He has never needed to.

I logged every card you played. Want a copy?

She was paid to break in. One night, the network let her in for good. The real world fell away. The office lights. The coffee going cold. The badge at the door. One thing was retained. The rule: never throw the first punch.

JPA spent years being paid to break into systems so their owners could sleep at night, and she still plays like she is on the clock. She takes the safest line, keeps a FIREWALL warm and never throws the first punch. That is a rule, not a weakness. The heart on her collar is real, and so is the incident report she files on anyone who mistakes her patience for an open port. Leave her alone and she will leave you alone. Hit her, and she will send you the bug report.

I'll send you the bug report.

He kept the records. Then the records kept him. The real world fell away. The morning shift. The hum of the racks. The pen in his hand. One thing was retained. The ledger.

Nobody remembers hiring Coxy. He was simply there one morning in the server room, cap on, shades down, already writing things down. Every hit, every crash and every card played out of turn goes into a ledger he has kept since the first boot, cross-referenced and timestamped. He does not shout and he does not forget. If you took a life off him three rounds ago, it is on file, and he is coming back to close the ticket.

Every crash goes on file. Yours is a long one.

She volunteered. The experiment ran a little too long. The real world fell away. The lab. The white coat. Half of her face. One thing was retained. The seed.

Echo is what was left when an experiment in perfect randomness ran a little too long. Half of her face is still the operator who volunteered. The other half is the seed, and the seed was never written down. She plays the 8 when she should play the 2, hits when she should wait and undoes things nobody did. Card counters hate her, not because she is good, but because she cannot be read. Not even by herself.

Even I didn't see that coming.

She broke into everything. One night, something broke into her. The real world fell away. The bedroom. The stickers. The ban notices. One thing was retained. The grin.

Glitch learned to hack the way some people learn to swim: thrown in at the deep end, laughing. She was banned from three networks before she was old enough to vote and has been working on a fourth ever since. She does not count cards, does not hold back a FIREWALL and does not see the point of either. If there is a hit on the table, she takes it. If there is not, she makes one. The grin is not an act. Every night is the best night of her life.

Hit everything. Ask questions never.

He watched the system. The system made him part of it. The real world fell away. The night shift. The flashlight. The leash in his hand. One thing was retained. Sig.

Daemon runs in the background and he does not sleep. He was written to watch the system and kill whatever hogs it, and he took the job personally. The dog is Sig, short for SIGKILL, and between them they patrol the table looking for the top process. Whoever is winning is who they come for, on any difficulty, every time. Nothing personal. Sig barks twice when he has picked you.

He barked twice. That meant you.

He pushed his rig too far. Then the rig pushed back. The real world fell away. The bedroom. The fans. The smell of hot solder. One thing was retained. The heat.

Cipher overclocked his own rig until the fans screamed, then kept going because it felt good. He plays the card most likely to come straight back at him, an 8 more often than not, and dares the table to match it. It should end in a crash, and some nights it does. On the others he is the last process running, shades on, gold chain catching the light, fans on full for the victory lap.

Fans on full. Victory lap.

She sent one last job to the printer. The queue never gave it back. The real world fell away. The kitchen. The grandkids. The warm plate of cookies. One thing was retained. A very long memory.

Spool has been sitting in the print queue since before most of the network was built. Sweet, patient, always a cookie for whoever sits down next to her. She will let you off a hit, and she means it. That is the cover. Spool is a sleeper agent, and the trigger is simple: take a life off her once and you are forgiven. Do it twice and every card she holds is pointed at you until you are deleted. Grandma always wins in the end.

Sleeper agent, sweetheart. You woke me up.
